iSisters appoints Karyn Steer as new Executive Director

Ottawa, ON – iSisters Technology Mentoring Inc (iSisters) is pleased to announce the appointment of Karyn Steer as incoming Executive Director of the Ottawa-based women’s charity providing free technology and employment skills training to disadvantaged women, girls and gender-diverse people.

Karyn will assume the role currently held by Ann McSweeney who is retiring on September 30 after more than 50 years in the non-profit sector, including the last three years at iSisters.  We are privileged to have had Ann steer our organization through turbulent pandemic times while at the same time tripling the number of women served during her tenure.

Karyn comes to the organization after a series of roles of increasing seniority at the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO), an iSisters partner. An accomplished leader with over 20 years of experience within the charitable sector, Karyn has a proven history of visionary agency and is respected for helping organizations innovate, thrive and grow.

“We’re excited to welcome Karyn to iSisters,” said Claire Toplis, Chair of the board of directors of iSisters, “and look forward to starting a new chapter in the life of our organization which has served the community for over 20 years.  At the same time, we also wish to thank Ann McSweeney for her numerous accomplishments in advancing the mission of iSisters and serving our learners over these past three years.”

“I’m thrilled to be joining iSisters,” said Karyn Steer, incoming Executive Director of iSisters. “I look forward to making use of my skills creating, launching and directing employability development initiatives which have empowered disadvantaged women, including women from racialized, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIA+ and women from disability communities.”

iSisters is a low-cost, high-impact charity that mentors disadvantaged women through skills development programs about computers, the internet, and employment. iSisters programs are designed in collaboration with partner organizations and customized for the specific learning needs of the students.
